Our CJDS Parent Committee (PC) is involved in supporting the entire CJDS school community. It fosters a spirit of outreach, inclusion, partnership, communication, and cooperation among the entire school community. Some of the many facets of the PC are community building programming, outreach, coordinating and encouraging volunteers to connect with school and parent programming, ongoing faculty and staff appreciation, parent education events, promoting social action opportunities, and much more. Under the umbrella of the PC is also the Chesed and Tikun Olam Committees along with several other committees.
PC activities include on-going signs of appreciation to our faculty and staff from “just because” coffees, to Faculty and Staff Appreciation Week, to bi-yearly gifts and beyond! Our Parent Committee welcomes new families at the beginning and throughout the entire year through our buddies program (pairing veteran families with incoming/new families to answer any questions and attend CJDS events together).
Some of our community building activities include a Family Bowling event, Mishpacha (Family) Movie Night, Parents' Night Out, Hanukkah and Candle Lighting Celebration, and individual grade family events such as sukkah hopping, apple picking, playdates and small groups weekends!
Our CJDS Tikun Olam (repair the world) Committee coordinates opportunities for families to do social action activities together. Some to highlight are our annual events such as singing at the Selfhelp Home during Hanukkah and packaging toiletries for the homeless at our Toiletry Drive for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
The Chesed Committee at CJDS has been the backbone to our school and its values since its inception. Chesed, in Hebrew, is often translated as “loving kindness." The Chesed committee was set up to support the entire school community in the best of times (i.e. new babies, new homes, new accomplishments), and in the difficult times (i.e. sickness, death of family member). CJDS is a community-based school and taking care of each other is an important value that is essential.
PC fundraising activities include the Rosh Hashanah honey sale, weekly and holiday challah sales, flowers during the CJDS Musical and Mishloach Manot (Purim baskets).
Our Parent Committee Co-Coordinators this year are Brooke Herszage and Cara Gutstein.
Chicago Jewish Day School is temporarily closed, but our learning continues. On Wednesday, March 18, CJDS implemented eLearning for all students. Please visit our eLearning & Information Page for the latest CJDS updates.
We encourage all community members to follow guidelines set in place by our local public health officials related to social distancing.
