Coming Soon at CJDS: Grade 5 + Sharsheret Coordinate "Pink Week"

Grade 5 and the national Jewish breast cancer non-profit organization, Sharsheret, have teamed up to plan a "Pink Week" beginning next Friday and into the following week. Sharsheret improves the lives of Jewish women and families living with or at increased genetic risk for breast or ovarian cancer through personalized support and educational outreach. On February 9th students will participate in pink challah braiding and a pink paper chain project. Sharsheret is Hebrew for ‘chain’ or ‘connection’. This name was chosen by their founder 20+ years ago because at Sharsheret, they believe they are all links in the chain holding women and families up when anyone is sick or otherwise in need of support.

Additionally, Grade 5 students have been doing their own research and learning about genetics and how that is related to cancer. They have planned a variety of whole-school activities with the goals of raising awareness and collecting funds. This week, in honor of Sharsheret and in conjunction with their Mixtures and Solutions unit in Science, Grade 5 made pink body scrubs to sell to CJDS students in an upcoming fundraiser. Stay tuned for details about the sale and "Pink Day" taking place on February 14th.
