CJDS commemorated Jewish Disability Month, which takes place each February, by welcoming Rachel Arfa, Commissioner of the City of Chicago Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) to Kabbalat Shabbat two weeks ago. Commissioner Arfa, along with her interpreter, Jennifer, shared insights about growing up as a deaf child and living living now as a deaf adult. As the first deaf person to serve as member of a Mayor's Cabinet nationwide, Commissioner Arfa spoke about the challenges she's had to overcome and afterwards took the time to answer students' many thoughtful questions.
