Grade 5 Science: Chemical Reactions through Bath Bombs
Jen Minkus

Grade 5 students discovered the concept of chemical reactions through their investigation of a common real world phenomenon: bath bombs. They examined the following essential questions: What is matter and how do substances interact? After making observations once a bath bomb was dropped in water, students went through a series of investigations where they learned about simple mixtures, suspensions and solutions.

They then made mixtures of water and solid materials and separated them with screens and filters. They explored with concentration, solubility, and saturation. Students then used three substances to make three different combinations of two substances. They added water to observe changes and the chemical reactions that took place. Eventually, they came to the conclusion that the ingredients can react together to create a new product. Using their new knowledge, students were able to design and create their own bath bomb recipes!
