A Hanukkah Science Experiment in JK

This week during JK Morning Meeting, students and their teachers talked about the Hanukkah story and the miracle of oil lasting for eight days. What followed was a science experiment involving oil and water. Teachers asked students what they thought would happen when the two are combined. Students hypothesized and then got to work on their experiments while in another group a teacher dyed the oil and water red inside a jar so that students could see the separation. Students learned in their exploration that the two do not, in fact, mix. This study is a wonderful example of how engaged learning can naturally evolve into a thoughtfully integrated unit.
