More Than Just a Game: Students Learn Valuable Communication Skills in P.E. Class
  • Physical Education

A Check-In With Coach Bryce:

In this latest unit, students will develop their skill sets of bumping, setting, hitting, and serving as they learn the sport of volleyball. I emphasize not only the rules and mechanics of the sport but promote the importance of teamwork as well. In the early weeks of the unit, lower school focuses on mechanics and participates in team challenges along the way. Middle school plays different games such as "Newcomb" which is a variation on the game itself. Players line up on the court as they would for a regular match, but instead of serving, bumping, setting, etc., they throw the ball over the net. This emphasizes moving your feet, being in position, communicating with teammates, and understanding the rules of volleyball without the pressure of hitting the ball over the net. This is a great confidence booster and precursor to playing an actual game.
