CJDS Celebrates Vibrant Traditions of Sigd
  • Jewish Campus Life

This week, vibrant colors filled our hallways in celebration of Sigd, the ancient Ethiopian Jewish holiday that commemorates the longing to return to Jerusalem and gratitude for having arrived. Colorful umbrellas and photos of Ethiopian Jews celebrating Sigd symbolize protection, unity, and joy!

Students in Morah Lianne Philipps' Grade 7 Judaic Studies brought the holiday to life by baking Dabu, sweet Ethiopian honey bread that’s traditionally included in the holiday’s break fast meal. Students linked the rituals of Sigd to aspects of the High Holidays, such as eating honey-filled foods for a sweet year, communal celebrations after prayer, and the renewal of the covenant between God and the Jewish people.

By learning about and celebrating Sigd here in the U.S. - and at CJDS - we honor the rich, diverse stories and traditions of the global Jewish community.
