How Does Chevruta Learning Enhance a Deeper Understanding?
  • Judaic Studies
  • Lower School
  • Middle School

Students in Judaic Studies classes continue to engage with each other through the PoP (Pedagogy of Partnership) model. Through chevruta (partner work), learning is enhanced as students use text as their third partner. This model also encourages the participant teachers to work together to find ways to integrate their disciplines through connected learning opportunities between subject matter classes. Tamar Cytryn, Director of Judaic Studies   explains, "Through PoP, we have introduced our students to the 'partnership learning triangle,' which envisions a balanced relationship between two learners and the text. Students use 'speech prompts' to help them develop the habit of listening deeply to their peers and the text and helping each other to express their thinking: from 'Can you say more about that?' to 'I don’t think you are understanding me; let me explain,' and even 'Attentive silence' - while keeping the text fully in the conversation."
