Understanding the Laws of Motion Through Hands-On Experiments
  • Middle School
  • Science

Grade 8 students are adding to their understanding of the laws of motion in Science class. They have some formulas in their back pocket and are able to calculate the force required to halt the descent of an object in free fall. This will help them to understand how the calculation compares to an object that descends a ramp from the same height. Since students couldn't arrive at a way to do that mathematically, they gave it a try with a ramp and stopwatches. With data in place for them to analyze, now their job turns to understanding the forces that result in the different times for descent.
