Embracing Fun & Flexibility Amid Mozart Renovation
  • Art
  • Physical Education

As our Mozart building undergoes renovation, relocating Art class to classrooms in the California building, Rachel Treister's students have embraced art "on the move." While they miss the myriad of supplies that were at the ready in the art room, they are settling into their projects and honing in on creative skills.

Grade 1 is working on a unit focusing on the painter Wassily Kandinsky, cutting out circles in various color combinations similar to Kandinsky's iconic painting "Squares with Concentric Circles." Grade 2 students are using fabric, beads, and ribbons to create matzah covers for Passover. Grade 4 students are working on neurographic drawings, which focus on creating freeform lines and then rounding or closing them off to create balance. Students are using black sharpies to achieve this and then adding contrast with oil pastels. Once Grade 5 students completed their Wayne Thiebaud-inspired paintings, they built upon this unit by using sculpey to create miniature desserts complete with cardboard plates and stands to elevate them. Kol hakavod to Rachel and our students for making the transition so seamless!
