Kindergarten Explores Math, Art, & the Senses Through Pumpkins
  • Lower School
  • Math
Kindergarten students have been exploring the vibrant season of fall, with a special focus on all things pumpkin! They examined three pumpkins of different sizes - large, medium, and small - that were displayed in the classroom. Many students were inspired to create still-life drawings of the pumpkins.

Later, they enjoyed guessing how many seeds they would find inside each pumpkin, which led the teachers to open them. Students felt the pumpkin pulp, smelled both the skin and the inner parts, and observed the similarities and differences with curiosity. They listened to the slurping sound as they removed the insides, then used magnifying glasses to examine the intricate details. Students then separated the seeds from the pulp into groups of 10, counted by tens, and learned how many seeds each pumpkin contained. The medium pumpkin contained 528 seeds, while the small pumpkin had 172 seeds. Snowflake, the class guinea pig, enjoyed eating the pumpkin slices!
