In the Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten Reggio Emilia-inspired classrooms, students use the atelier (studio) as an extension of their learning. As students prepared for Hanukkah they studied hanukkiyot at school and many brought ones from home to share. They made comparisons and discussed the artistry in each design through drawings and small group discussions. This deepened their understanding of the significance of the hanukkiyah, including the rules of a kosher hanukkiyah and what makes it different from a menorah. Each student was then invited to the atelier to make their own hanukkiyah using a variety of beautiful repurposed materials. They were mesmerized by the elaborate choices of tile, wood, metal, glass, and more. While making their hanukkiyot, students practiced a variety of math skills including counting and one-to-one correspondence. They worked with their teachers to create a Hanukkiyah Museum and invited their families to view them following Kabbalat Shabbat last week. It was a sweet scene to witness the pride of both students and their parents as they toured the hanukkiyot designs and discussed their meaning.
