Grade 8 Explores Responsibility and Justice Through Talmud Study
  • Judaic Studies
  • Middle School

In Grade 8 Judaic Studies, Shira Forester's students have been studying Bava Kamma 27, a text from the Talmud that details who is responsible to pay for damages when someone leaves their jug/pitcher in a public space and someone else breaks it.

After studying what the Rabbis of Gemara had to say, they envisioned what a case like this would look like at CJDS. Students were assigned a condition from the Gemara (ex. the breaking took place in the dark or the jug was broken intentionally) that could impact the ruling. Students used Model Magic to create jugs/pitchers to bring their case to life, and they placed them in the location where the incident they designed took place. Finally, they created posters to detail the scenario and who is liable, using the text to defend their claims.
