Egg-cellent Engineering in Grade 8 Science

Grade 8 students are studying the relationship between force, mass, and acceleration and tested their knowledge this week with an egg drop challenge. Each group built a device that must survive an impact from the side that is estimated at 38 Newtons of force and an impact from above that is estimated at 40.4 Newtons. They employed strategies including devices designed to shatter, elements designed to go under compression, and small changes related to friction to aim to keep the structure from being pinned against the ground. Students were surprised to find that the eggs could resist the side impact of the drop - only one egg out of seven broke! From the drop from above, three out of seven survived the impact.
