Grade 7 Science Students Test Limits in Structural Engineering Experiment

To understand the forces at play within a structure and learn more about the concepts of tension, compression, shearing, and torsion, students in Alex Randhava's Grade 7 science classes took on the challenge of constructing a tower taller than 300 centimeters using a limited supply of delicate balsa wood beams. They began with a common ratio of height to base (5:1) but diverged from there. Working collaboratively, each group set out on unique design journeys.

One team chose a wedding cake-inspired design, standing on four vertical columns and tapering beautifully upward. Meanwhile, another team creatively embraced triangles, maximizing stability by encasing three sturdy columns. Both designs faced the intriguing task of overcoming bowing in vertical columns, managing shearing from misaligned forces, and safeguarding against the fragility of the materials. With teamwork and innovative thinking, the young engineers demonstrated remarkable problem-solving skills and creativity.
