Grade 7 Science Students Test Their Visual Ability to Learn About Evolutionary Path

Grade 7 students are studying evolution, and they have noticed something important about organisms' eyes - they reveal a lot about the animal's evolutionary path. Science teacher Alex Randhava explains that predators need binocular vision and a good sense of three dimensional space. Animals concerned about predation need a wider field of vision to be aware of what's sneaking up on them.

Our visual ability reveals things about the human evolutionary path. The next step for students is to conduct experiments on our own eyes, and use that data to make hypotheses about our evolution. Students will test their ability to detect color, sense motion, and identify things at the periphery of their vision. The goal is to use this understanding to guess why these traits were rewarded. Can they guess the early human diet? Their cycle of day/night activity? Group size? We think it might be possible!
