Grade 6 Launches Water Inquiry Through Hands-On Exploration

Students in Claudia Edwards' Grade 6 Science class have launched their water unit with an exploration of the ocean - home to roughly 97% of Earth's water. Students conducted a series of experiments to learn about how salinity and temperature affect ocean water. In their salinity experiment, students explored how much salt it would take to get a plastic bolt to float. In their temperature experiment, students made hot and cold water balloons to see whether temperature would affect density. They concluded that the greater the salinity and the colder the temperature, the denser the water becomes.

On Wednesday, students took a field trip to LaBagh Woods with Claudia and Middle School Math teacher Kate Burstein to sample the water to test for different traits, such as pH. They donned heavy-duty waterproof pants and embarked on a wet adventure to find various organisms. They discovered several creatures, including a few fish and even a crayfish.
