Grade 4 Explorers Perform & Share Their Extensive Learning
  • Lower School
Yesterday morning, the Grade 4 students concluded their Age of Exploration unit with a dynamic culmination event, celebrating an interdisciplinary approach that connected learning across all subjects. Throughout the unit, students explored the lives and legacies of various explorers, evaluating the lasting effects—both positive and negative—of their discoveries. They discussed how in the study of history, often times explorers are given the credit that Native People actually merited, particularly when it comes to developing the land. Students chose from a broad range of explorers to research ranging from Leif Erikson to Sir Francis Drake to Sacagawea and Amelia Earhart. They honed their research skills by discerning credible sources and engaging with nonfiction books and websites to uncover historical details about different explorers. Using this information, they organized their findings and wrote thoughtful, well-structured body paragraphs.

Additionally, students creatively expressed their understanding through a variety of mediums, including essays, posters, and art projects. They took a special look at notable Israeli figures, practicing Hebrew translation to uncover details about researchers’ names and their historical significance.

On Thursday, Grade 4 families enjoyed an immersive experience where students embraced their roles with costumes, accents, and a rich knowledge base developed from their extensive research, including a pirate song in Hebrew! They proudly presented their work, including essays that highlight the explorers’ motivations and journeys. Todah rabah to the Grade 4 Team—Morot Jen Katz, Maya Cohen, Suzanne Caster, Julia Grinberg, Dorit Rogan for guiding the students through this meaningful and inspiring educational journey.
