In Grade 3's Structures of Life Unit, student scientists dove into the study of seeds through hands-on investigation and observation. Teachers Lauren Radner and Rachel Schmuckler encouraged students to explore the seeds of various fruits, examining their size, shape, color, and texture in detail. By comparing and contrasting these characteristics, students each gained a deeper understanding of how different seeds grow and develop into plants, and that seeds can be as different from one another as the plants they will turn into.

To connect the learning with the season, students created Sukkot-themed Seed Art. Since Sukkot is a harvest holiday that celebrates the gathering of crops, they used seeds as symbols of growth and life to represent the meaning of the holiday. They thoughtfully selected seeds with unique characteristics to create artwork that honors both their learning in science and the traditions of the holiday. Through this project, students made meaningful connections between science, art, and the celebration of Sukkot!
