Grade 1 students recently finished their in-depth author study of Kevin Henkes and Tom Percival. Throughout the unit, they focused on friendship, feelings, and the grade's theme of Tikkun Olam (healing the world). Throughout their learning, under the guidance of their teachers, Rachel Warach, Lily Kawer, and Shayna Lopatin, students practiced sequencing stories, making connections with characters, comparing and contrasting, and tracking character growth through or across books using writing, art, and discussion. They also made connections between the books' themes and the themes of the High Holidays.
To celebrate all their learning, students culminated the unit with activities that related back to the books they read. Highlights were "camping out" and making S'mores just like Bailey, showing perseverance with a tricky puzzle just like Tilda, making a Brave Flag just like Sheila Rae...and more!
