Grade 1 scientists have launched their science learning with an exploration into the five senses. Last week, they focused on touch and taste, beginning by creating a word bank of adjectives that could describe texture. Then, they were invited to touch different recycled materials that their teachers, Rachel Warach, Lily Kawer, and Shayna Lopatin collected, and chose a word to describe that texture, strengthening not only their knowledge of the sense of touch but also introducing them to adjectives and a slew of new vocabulary words. They wrote the adjective on a "feeling hand" and then glued the corresponding material to the hand. A delicious highlight was preparing and eating Rosh Hashanah-themed apple granola, using new vocabulary to describe both texture and taste.
