This week, Grade 4 students wrapped up their unit on Judaism and Space in their Judaic Studies class. In conjunction with Yom HaAtzmaut and students' general education unit on Planetary Systems, they spent the last two weeks learning about Israel's first astronaut, Ilan Ramon, Bereshit 1, the moonlander project launched by SpaceIL in 2019, as well as Judaism's lunisolar calendar. Their exploration of this topic culminated with a hands-on project during which students built 'moonlanders' out of straws, tape, marshmallows, note cards, and rubber bands. Students were challenged to design a craft with their chevruta partner that could fall, land, and keep their marshmallow astronauts safely inside their capsule - a paper cup! They had so much fun designing, building, and testing their moonlanders!
