How Classroom Pets Foster Empathy & Responsibility
  • Lower School
  • Reggio Emilia-Inspired Learning
  • Social Emotional Skills

Our JK and K students are already deep into their study of learning about animals and animal care, with the classroom pets as the stars—three guinea pigs and one bearded dragon named Snowflake, Diamond, Goldie, and Beardy. Having pets in class helps children of all ages develop empathy and important social skills in a natural, hands-on way. When children care for a pet—feeding them, observing them, or gently interacting with them—they begin to understand the needs of another living being and practice kindness and responsibility. Pets also give children chances to work together, share responsibilities, and communicate about how to keep the animals safe and happy. These shared experiences foster cooperation, patience, and compassion, helping children build stronger relationships with each other while learning the value of caring for others.
