By bringing students of different ages together in “family” groups, Mishpachot creates meaningful opportunities to build relationships, learn from one another, celebrate together, and develop a shared sense of Jewish community, responsibility, and belonging.

Students grow in powerful ways when they have opportunities to learn with and from peers of different ages. Younger students are inspired by older peers who serve as role models, while older students gain confidence, leadership skills, and a deeper sense of responsibility. Learning across ages encourages collaboration, empathy, and mutual respect, allowing students to see new perspectives and recognize the strengths each person brings. These shared experiences build meaningful relationships and reinforce the understanding that everyone has something to teach and something to learn.

The Tefillah Buddies program pairs Grade 1 students with Grade 2 students, allowing them to learn tefillah from each other. As role models, Grade 2 students help their younger buddies learn what it means to be respectful and engaged participants in tefillah, from following along and joining in prayer to understanding the importance of the sacred space they create together. In the process, Grade 1 students build confidence and familiarity with tefillah, while Grade 2 students develop leadership, responsibility, and pride in sharing what they have learned.

Schoolwide celebrations bring students of all ages together, creating joyful opportunities to connect beyond their individual classrooms and grade levels. Whether gathering for Jewish holidays or special programs, students sing, learn, celebrate, and make memories together. These shared experiences deepen relationships across grades, build a sense of belonging, and help students see themselves as part of something large - a vibrant, connected CJDS community.
